WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE SHIPPING BY AIR FREIGHT

          1. What is air freight?
          arrow_drop_down

As the name suggests, air freight refers to the transportation of goods by air. Regardless of the type of goods — whether small parcels or bulky palletized goods — almost anything can be shipped by air. Air shipping is becoming increasingly important in an era of globalization and is accelerating thanks to innovation.

Air freight consists of three main stages:

          • Pre-carriage: collection of the goods and transport to the departure airport.
          • Main transport: flight from the departure airport to the arrival airport.
          • On-carriage: delivery from the destination airport to the final address.

Depending on the carrier and the selected service, different steps may be included in the air freight service. Four options are typically distinguished:

          1. door-to-door: the air carrier handles the entire process, from pickup to final delivery.
          2. airport-to-door: pickup is carried out by another company, and the air carrier takes over at the airport.
          3. airport-to-airport: the air carrier manages only the air segment. Pickup and delivery are handled by others.
          4. door-to-airport: the pre-carriage is handled by the air carrier, and the rest is passed on to another provider.

JUMiNGO offers you a simple and efficient door-to-door service. This allows you to have your goods delivered directly to the recipient by air. Other options are also available upon request.

          2. When is it advantageous to ship by air?
          arrow_drop_down

When it comes to speed in international shipping, air freight is clearly the winner.

Safety and reliability are also major advantages of air transport. Airplanes are considered one of the safest modes of transport, and their short transit times significantly reduce the risk of complications. In addition, flight schedules are generally highly reliable, limiting delays.

Generally speaking, air freight is more expensive than road or sea transport, as the cost is calculated based on weight or volume. However, this is offset by lower storage costs. Thanks to fast delivery times, storage space requirements are reduced, allowing for cost savings. Another benefit: lower capital lock-up costs.

          3. How to properly prepare a shipment for air transport?
          arrow_drop_down

Packaging must meet specific requirements when shipping by air freight. On the one hand, climatic conditions must be taken into account. Today, many types of aircraft are equipped with climate-controlled cargo holds and decompression systems. However, you should always anticipate pressure and temperature fluctuations. For example, goods may be exposed to humidity during transshipment or be subject to temperature variations when the cargo hold is opened.

On the other hand, air freight safety regulations must be observed. Packages must be packed in such a way that they withstand shocks caused by turbulence and provide sufficient protection against other transported goods.

          4. Are there any dangerous goods prohibited from being shipped by air?
          arrow_drop_down

We speak of dangerous goods when an item presents a risk to the safety of people, animals, or other transported goods. Toxic substances, flammable materials, or weapons are strictly excluded from shipment. There are also goods with restricted shipping, such as food products or fragile items. For this type of shipment, it is important to note that no claims for damages will be accepted.

          5. What is the difference between "belly" air freight and "cargo" air freight?
          arrow_drop_down

In air freight, we distinguish between two types of transport. Belly refers to goods transported as freight in passenger aircraft, whereas Cargo refers to transport carried out by cargo-only aircraft.

Thus, all our JUMiNGO Airfreight shipments are, for example, transported as freight in passenger aircraft. All other rates, whether for economy shipping with FedEx or express shipping with DHL, are fully routed via cargo aircraft to the respective destination countries.
